Clare Chmiel joined The Southern Group bringing more than 16 years of experience in congressional and government affairs. She advises clients on navigating the federal legislative and regulatory landscape, with a focus on health care policy and representing physician, nursing, and medical research organizations. 

Prior to joining the firm, Clare served as a Senior Government Affairs Analyst at Polsinelli, where she managed a portfolio of clients across health care, commerce, and transportation sectors. In that role, she worked closely with client leadership teams to develop and execute public policy strategies, maintained relationships with congressional offices, and coordinated advocacy efforts, including organizing meetings with policymakers and monitoring legislative and regulatory developments impacting client priorities. 

Clare has a broad range of experience supporting health care clients, helping organizations understand the impact of public policy on their operations and advancing strategic advocacy efforts. She is known for her ability to connect clients with policymakers, build relationships on Capitol Hill, and guide organizations through complex legislative processes. 

Earlier in her career, Clare served on the Washington, D.C. staff of Congresswoman Doris Matsui, where she gained firsthand experience in congressional operations and policymaking. She also worked on political campaigns and national fundraising efforts for Members of Congress, providing her with a strong understanding of the political dynamics that shape policy outcomes. 

Clare earned her bachelor’s degree from DePaul University, where she dual-majored in Political Science and Women’s Studies.
